On Wednesday 13th March, Coombe Dean students took a day away from their usual timetable to engage in a range of trips, lessons & workshops to support their future career choices.

Year 7 visited Paignton Zoo where they learned about the wide variety of different job roles needed to run the zoo. Year 10 visited Plymouth University where they learned about the opportunities available in Higher Education and how they are able to access these. Year 12 visited Exeter UCAS Fair where they had the opportunity to speak with most UK Universities, supporting them in making the decision if university is the right next step for them and what is required for them to access the courses they are interested in.

Year 11 spent the day with Maths & English teachers, supporting them in achieving the grades that they need in order to move onto the Post-16 choices they are aspiring to.

Years 8-10 & 13 attended workshops delivered by employers and training providers, giving them the opportunity to learn more about their future options.  With 18 different employers and training providers volunteering their time, it was great to see the wider community coming together to support our students.

When asked about what they most enjoyed on the day, employers responded by saying:

“The participants all engaged in our hands on practical at the end of the session.”

“The students were really engaged and felt comfortable to speak up.”

“Spending time with the students-seeing what they came up with when working on a new Croc design.”

“The engagement of the students. The whole school approach to careers.”

Coombe Dean is very grateful to all the employers and training providers who gave up their time to benefit our students and look forward to working with them again in the future.

Employers & training providers who delivered sessions include: Duchy College, Hugs Children’s Charity, Young Enterprise, Access Creative College, Wolferstans, NHS, AECOM, The British Army, Taylor Wimpy, Adult Social Care, Plymouth University, Greenlight, Santander, CSW, Totus, Princess Yachts
